Whey protein

Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed on a daily basis by the body. In its purest form, as whey protein isolate, it contains little to no fat, lactose or cholesterol . It provides the body with the necessary building blocks to produce amino acids that are used for building muscle tissue. Whey protein contains the perfect combination of overall amino acid makeup and in right concentrations for optimal performance in the body. Both hormonal and cellular responses enhances with supplementation of whey protein. It has the benefits on immune system of the body too. Whey protein plays a role as an antioxidant and helps support a health immune system. Consistent whey protein intake coupled with exercise results in consistent muscle building.

Benefits:

Whey isolate and concentrate:

Comparing these both, whey protein is more expensive than concentrate because of its high quality, and it has higher biological value. Whey protein isolate contains more protein with less fat and lactose per serving. Isolate contains 90-98% protein while whey concentrate contains 70-85%. Whey protein isolate is the highest yield of protein available which comes from milk. Because of its chemical properties, whey protein is the easiest to absorb into the muscles. With its high concentration whey protein isolate is the best to use. Whey protein isolate has the immune boosting properties. It is better to use whey protein concentrate with some isolate blended in it.

Side-effects:

People who are allergic to diary products can react to whey proteins and therefore should avoid it. Long term and excessive intake are associated with deteriorating kidney function and osteoporosis. There can be development of diabeted in children

Whey protein and cancer:

Several studies have been done on animals in regard of cancer causing chemicals to see what effects whey protein concentrate has on cancer prevention or treatment.

Rats were given various proteins and then carcinogen dimethylhydrazine. Rats which were given whey protein concentrate showed fewer tumors and a reduced area of tumors. Whey protein concentrate inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells at low concentrations. Cancer patients showed a regression in some pateint’s tumors when they were given whey protein concentrate at 30 grams per day.

The two basic methods used to process whey protein are

  1. Microfiltration and ultrafiltartion
  2. Ionexchange

Microfiltrartion process gives a lower concentration of proteins and amino acids, where natural ceramic filters are used to separate whey protein from protein solution. Undesirable components such as fat and lactose are filtered out. The particles are separated based on their molecular size and shape.

The advantage of this processing methods are:

Ion exchange whey protein:

It involves separating proteins based on their electrical charge. Two chemicals are used to achieve this: hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. The electrical charge on the proteins attaches them to the resins in the reaction vessel. Its benefit is that its end product has less fat and lactose
